Labour Day

Ah, Labour Day is coming up. It falls on May 1 every year.

Is it just another holiday and a reason for Malaysians to indulge in consumeristic pursuits like enjoying a holiday, shopping or watching a movie?

As is the case for many such holidays, the actual reason that May 1 was declared a holiday is forgotten or even never known to many.

Although its origins are steeped in European history and culture including marking the first day of summer and other socialist movements, it is now known globally as International Workers' Day or Labour Day.

International Workers' Day (a name used interchangeably with May Day) is a celebration of the social and economic achievements of the international labour movement. May Day commonly sees organized street demonstrations by hundreds of thousands of working people and their labour unions throughout Europe and most of the rest of the world — though, as noted below, not in either the United States or Canada. More radical groups such as communists and anarchists are also given to widespread street protest on this day as well.
